Somebody Had to Sign Things That Week

This message is for the years since the funeral in which one person in your family has decided everything, and nobody ever agreed to that

Since their father died, Tomás decides, and none of the four of them ever agreed to that.

It is six years. And it covers everything: what happens at Christmas, who has the house in August, which of the grandchildren is told what and when, whether their mother is up to a thing, when the grave gets seen to.

Not one of those was ever discussed. They are announced, warmly, usually by message, usually beginning with the words just to let you know.

Elena is the second oldest and she has been carrying something about this for about four years.

Not anger, exactly. She loves her brother and she would tell you that first. It is closer to a kind of tiredness that arrives when she sees his name come up, and a small habitual bracing that she is not proud of and has never mentioned to anybody.

She has run the whole thing round her own head a great many times. Whether she is jealous. Whether this is about something from when they were young. Whether she is the sort of woman who cannot be led. She has found things she does not like in herself, because anybody who searches that hard does.

And then in the spring, at the kitchen table, at about half past eleven, after everybody else had gone, Tomás said something he has never said.

They had been talking about the house in August, and Elena had said, mildly, that it would be nice to know earlier this year.

And Tomás said, "I did not want it."

She said, "Want what?"

And he said, "Any of it. I did not want to be the one." And then, looking at the table: "Somebody had to sign things in the week after the funeral. There were forms, and Mamá could not, and you were all in pieces, and I signed them because I was the one standing up."

He turned his cup round.

"And nobody ever asked me to stop."

Elena did not say anything for a while.

Because six years of quiet resentment had just been handed a completely different picture, and it did not make the resentment silly, and it did not make her wrong about the arrangement, and it changed what the arrangement actually is.

Nobody took anything. A man signed forms in the worst week of his life and the family closed around that shape and never reopened it.

Now let me ask you when yours started.

Because if one voice decides in your family, it started somewhere, and it was probably a week when somebody had to do something and did it. And you have been reading it ever since as a character, when it might be a shape.

Somebody Had to Sign Things That Week

The reason God gave him seventy

There is a moment in Numbers where Moses tells God, in plain words, that he cannot carry the people on his own, and God's answer is not encouragement.

I will take of the Spirit who is upon you, and will put Him upon them; and they shall bear the burden of the people with you, so that you will not bear it alone.Numbers 11:17

They shall bear the burden with you. Seventy of them, named and gathered, and the load moves off one man onto a group.

So that you will not bear it alone. And there is the reason, stated by God Himself, in the last four words. Not so the people would be better represented, though they would be. So that Moses would not carry it by himself.

Read that again if your family has a Tomás in it. The sharing was mercy toward the one carrying, before it was anything else.

So hear this said over you, at the kitchen table at half past eleven. Your instinct that a family is not supposed to run through one person is God's own instinct about His own people, and the six years you have spent wondering what is wrong with you have been six years of agreeing with Numbers 11. That is written, and it is the Holy Spirit who is named in that verse as the very thing distributed across the seventy, which tells you what kind of arrangement He is in favor of.

Now let me be careful, because this article could start a conversation in a family that a page has no business starting.

Nothing here tells you to raise it with your brother.

Not this August, not at Christmas, not in a message afterward. I do not know your family, I do not know what six years and one funeral have made of it, and this page is not going to spend that from here. If nothing is ever said and August is announced again next spring, you have not failed anything in this article.

And nothing here says he has done a single thing wrong. That has to be said loudest of all. He signed forms in the week after his father died because he was the one standing up, and every year since, the family has left it exactly where it landed. That is not a man seizing anything. That is a man nobody ever relieved.

What this is for is two things, and they are both about you.

The first: you were not wrong to notice.

You have spent four years auditing your own heart for jealousy and for pride, and finding bits and pieces, because a search like that always finds something. And the plain fact underneath is that a family running through one person is a shape God moved away from in Numbers, and noticing it is not a defect in a sister.

The second is harder and it is better.

The person you have been braced against has been carrying it alone.

That does not make your tiredness silly and it does not mean the arrangement is fine. It means the ache has been pointing at the wrong thing. What you have actually been living next to for six years is not a brother who took over. It is a brother nobody has helped since a Tuesday in a hospital corridor.

You are able to hold both: that the shape is wrong, and that nobody in it is the villain. That is written into a passage where God fixes exactly this without anybody being blamed, and the Spirit of God is the one who moves an ache off resentment and onto compassion, and He does it in His own time.

There was a movement five hundred years ago whose whole structural instinct was that no single person should be the place a thing finally rests, and their reason was not suspicion. Read their own writing and it is full of concern for the person carrying: they thought a man left alone with it would be crushed, and they were right about that, and they built the sharing partly to protect him.

The breakthrough

So tonight you say his name.

Not a confrontation. Not a plan. His name, out loud, in a room by yourself, as the name of a man who has been carrying something alone for six years.

That is going to do two things at once, and both of them are the point. It will take the arrangement off your own conscience, because you will hear that it is a shape and not a fault of yours. And it will move him, in your own chest, from the person you brace against to the person nobody relieved.

God's own reason for the seventy was so that Moses would not bear it alone, and He said it in those words. That is what is written, and the Holy Spirit is the one who moves an ache from resentment to compassion, and He does that at His own pace and not because an article suggested it.

Say the name. Then put the kettle on.

Declare this over yourself

Say them out loud after the name. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so this is not you excusing anything or accusing anybody: the clarity is His to give, and the Holy Spirit is the one who moves an ache off resentment. Whether anything in that family is ever said out loud is His to decide, and He answers in His own way.

  1. Six years of auditing my own heart, you are closed, and you never once produced the fault you were looking for. Scripture has God putting the Spirit on seventy so that one man would not bear the burden alone, and the sharing was mercy toward the one carrying.
  2. Bracing that starts when his name comes up, get out of this kitchen in the name of Jesus. Jesus moved the load off one man Himself, and my brother did not take anything, he signed forms in the worst week of his life and nobody ever relieved him.
  3. Father, You said so that you will not bear it alone, and You said it about the one at the front, and Your Spirit is telling me so with his name still in this room. Authority is meant to answer to something, and nobody in this family was meant to carry it alone.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
