Order In The ChaosPsalm 4:8

The Cupboard Faces Forward

This message is for keeping everything in exact order because somewhere early you learned that when things slip, something bad follows

In Hakim's kitchen every label in the cupboard faces out.

Not roughly. Every one, turned so the writing is square to the front, and if you take the rice down and put it back with the label sideways he will straighten it the next time he opens that door, and he will do it without noticing he has done it, the way you would straighten a picture.

The shoes at the door are in a line. The chargers are wound the same way. There is a place for the keys and the keys are in it, and the small drawer of things that have no place has been gone through twice this year.

Rana finds it funny. She has been married to him for nineteen years and she says he is the only man she knows who tidies a hotel room.

He would tell you it is just how he is. He would say it lightly, and then he would change the subject, and he is a warm man and you would let him.

But here is the thing about Hakim, and it is not funny.

He cannot sleep if the kitchen is not straight.

Not will not. Cannot. He will lie there, and it will be twenty past one, and he will get up and go down and do it, and he is fifty-one years old and he has been doing this since he was about nine.

He grew up in a house where things moved without warning.

That is all I am going to say about it, because it is not a horror story and he would hate it being told as one. There was no violence in that house. There was a father who was often unwell in a way nobody named, and money that came and went, and three addresses in five years, and a boy who could not predict on Tuesday what Thursday was going to be.

And that boy found one thing he could hold.

He lined up the shoes at the door.

He did it every evening, and nobody asked him to and nobody ever mentioned it, and it worked. It genuinely worked. For about ten minutes after he did it, the house felt like a house that was going to hold together.

So he kept it. And it grew, the way these things grow, into a whole way of living that from the outside looks like a tidy man and from the inside is a security system that has to be armed every single night.

His daughter is seven.

She came in from the garden last week and she took her shoes off and she lined them up. Not tidily. Precisely. And then she looked up at him to check.

He said something warm and normal and she ran off.

And he stood in the hall for a long time.

Now let me ask you what yours is.

Because it may not be a cupboard. It may be the inbox, or the accounts, or the way you cannot leave the house until the beds are made, or a plan for a day out that has three fallbacks in it. And the question is not whether you are tidy. The question is what you are afraid happens if it slips.

The Cupboard Faces Forward

Who is actually doing the holding

David writes a short psalm about lying down, and the last line of it is the whole argument.

In peace I will both lie down and sleep, for You alone, O Lord, make me to dwell in safety.Psalm 4:8

You alone.

Not: I have made everything secure and therefore I can sleep. Not even: I have done my part and God does the rest. The sentence puts the safety in one place and it is not the house.

And notice what he does not say. He does not say the doors should be left open. He does not say a man who bolts his door has failed to trust God. This is a psalm, not a policy, and there is nothing in the Bible against a tidy cupboard.

What it says is who is holding it.

So hear this said over you, standing in a hallway looking at two small shoes. The safety of your house has never once rested on whether the labels face out, and you can keep every good habit you have and take this weight off it tonight. That is written into a psalm about a man lying down, and it is the Holy Spirit who is called the Comforter, and He does that work in a person while the person sleeps.

Now let me be careful, because there are two things I could say here and one of them would wreck you.

I am not telling you your order is the problem.

Order is a kindness. A house with a place for the keys is a house where nobody starts the morning in a panic, and a woman who plans a day out with a fallback in it is a woman whose children have a good day. The Bible has a God who separates light from dark and puts things in order and calls it good, and a church told to do things decently and in order, and none of that is an accident of temperament.

Your instinct is not a fault. It was a gift and it was a survival, and at nine years old it did something for you that nobody else in that house was able to do.

So we are not taking it away.

What we are doing is taking the job off it.

Because somewhere in those years, without any decision being made, your order stopped being a good habit and became the thing that is holding the roof up. And that is a job it cannot do, and it was never asked to do it, and it is why you are downstairs at twenty past one.

You have been arming a security system every night against a house you left forty years ago.

The written word says He gives to His beloved even in their sleep, which is a sentence about work being done that the sleeper is not doing. And the Spirit of God is the one who bears witness with your spirit that you are a child, and a child in a safe house does not check the doors.

There was a movement five hundred years ago that loved order to the point of parody: forms, orders of service, a book of order, courts that met on a schedule. And they said, in nearly every generation, that the whole point of the structure was that a person could stop carrying it. The form exists so that a tired man on a Sunday does not have to invent anything. Order as a service to the weak, never as the thing that saves.

The breakthrough

So tonight you leave one thing.

One. Small, and real, and yours: the label sideways, the shoes at an angle, one mug on the drainer, the chair not pushed in.

And you go to bed with it like that.

You will notice it. You may lie there for a while. And the thing you are actually going to find out is not whether you can stand a crooked label, it is that the house held anyway, and that it was never the label doing the holding.

In peace I will both lie down and sleep, for You alone make me to dwell in safety. That is what is written, and the Holy Spirit is the Comforter given to us, and He is at work in a man who is asleep and not straightening anything.

Not the whole system. One thing. Tonight.

Declare this over yourself

Say them out loud in the dark if you can. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so this is not you making yourself safe by a new method: the safety is His, and the Holy Spirit is the Comforter who does the keeping. Whether the fear quiets tonight or over a long season is His to decide, and He answers in His own way.

  1. Job I gave a tidy cupboard when I was nine, you are relieved of it, and the labels can stay as they are. Scripture says in peace I will both lie down and sleep, for You alone make me to dwell in safety.
  2. Fear that something bad follows when things slip, get out of this house in the name of Jesus. Jesus is the one holding this together, and the shoes at the door never were.
  3. Father, You alone make me dwell in safety, and Your Spirit is the Comforter at work in me while I sleep and straighten nothing. Order is a kindness, not a cage, and it was never the thing keeping me safe.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
