Ignacio is forty-one and he is the only one in that house who has this.
Big family. Six of them, and cousins, and everybody still lives within about twenty minutes of everybody else, and there is a meal most Sundays and nobody has ever once asked him to stop coming.
They are not against it. That is important and it is not what people assume.
His mother thinks it is something he has been going through. She has thought that for nineteen years, which by any normal measure of a phase should have ended it, and she still says this thing you do in a tone of real affection. His brothers are fine about it. One of them defends him at work when it comes up.
Nobody has ever been cruel to him about it in his life.
He is just alone in it, at every single table he sits at, and he has been for nineteen years.
And underneath that there is a feeling he has never once been able to name, and it is not loneliness.
It is guilt.
Something like the feeling of having taken the last of something. As though there was one seat at that table and he sat in it, and the fact that he has this and they do not is a thing he did, and not something that happened to him.
He would not defend that if you said it back to him. He knows it is not logical. It is under everything anyway.
It came up at his mother's birthday.
Twenty-odd people, plates everywhere, and somebody said, "Nacho, say grace, you are the religious one."
Said warmly. Said as a compliment, more or less. And everybody put their forks down and bowed their heads and meant it, and one of his aunts said amen properly.
And he said it, and it was fine, and afterward his brother put a hand on his shoulder and said, "That was nice."
And Ignacio went into the kitchen and stood by the sink with a cloth in his hand for about two minutes.
Because they will let him do it. They are glad he does it. They will bow their heads for it and mean it in the room.
And they will not come in.
Now let me ask you what happens in you when they ask.
Because if you are the only one, there is a moment like that in your family and it happens two or three times a year, and it is always kind, and it always costs you something you cannot explain to anybody at that table.

When the choosing happened
Paul opens Ephesians with one enormous sentence, and the part that matters here is the timestamp.
Just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him. In love He predestined us to adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the kind intention of His will.Ephesians 1:4 to 5
Before the foundation of the world.
That is the whole answer to your guilt and I want you to see why.
If the choosing was made before there was a world, then it was made before there was a family, before there was a table, before there was a last seat and before there was anything to take. It is not a resource that was in the room. There is no quantity in it and nothing was used up by you being in it.
According to the kind intention of His will. Kind intention. That is the phrase Paul reaches for, and it is worth having in front of you, because a person carrying guilt about this tends to imagine something colder.
So hear this said over you, standing at a sink with a cloth in your hand. You did not take anything from anybody, because the choosing about you was made before there was a house for a seat to be short in, and nineteen years of quiet guilt has been about an arithmetic that does not exist. That is written in the first chapter of Ephesians with the timestamp in it, and it is the Holy Spirit who is named as the seal on that a few verses later, and He was put on you by God and not awarded out of a limited supply.
Now let me be very clear about the thing I am not going to do in this article.
I am not going to tell you where anybody at that table stands with God.
Not your mother. Not your brothers. Not the aunt who said amen properly. I do not know and you do not know and nobody in a pulpit or a book knows, and any article that starts sorting a reader's family into categories has stopped being ministry and started being something else.
That is not modesty. It is what the Bible actually does with this subject. Every single time election is written about in the New Testament, it is written to believers about themselves, as comfort. It is never once handed to anybody as a tool for assessing another person, and the moment it is used that way it has been turned inside out.
So we are not going there, and if you have been quietly going there at three in the morning, stop, because you are trying to do a job that was never given to you and that you do not have the information for.
Here is what you do have.
You have your own standing, which is settled and was settled before the world, and you have been holding it loosely for nineteen years because you felt guilty for having it.
And you have a family who loves you, and a table you are welcome at, and two or three moments a year where they hand you the grace to say and mean it while they listen.
That is not nothing. That is a house where the thing is spoken out loud by somebody they love, several times a year, for nineteen years.
The word says that the household of a believer is set apart in a way Paul says he cannot fully explain, and that the way a life is lived can be understood without a word being said. And the Spirit of God is the one who does the actual work in a person, which is a relief, because it means the outcome in that house was never resting on how well you argue at a table.
Your job in that family was never to be their evidence. It was to be their brother, who happens to be the one who prays.
So tonight you say one name and then stop.
One. The person at that table you carry the most, and you know who it is.
Say the name out loud in prayer. And then stop.
Do not add the argument. Do not add the reasons, or the plan, or the eleven things you would say to them if they would let you, and do not add the anxiety, which is what all of that actually is.
Just the name. Say it and leave it with Him.
He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, in love, according to the kind intention of His will. That is what is written, and the timestamp is on it, and the Holy Spirit is the seal on you and He is the one who does the work in a person that nobody else can do.
You did not take the last seat. There was never a shortage.
Declare this over yourself
Say them out loud in the quiet. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so this is not you claiming anything over anybody else: your standing is His to give and the work in that house is His to do, and the Holy Spirit is the seal on you. Whether anything changes at that table is His to decide, and He answers in His own way.
- Guilt that I took the last of something, you are counting a quantity that has never existed, and I am putting you down tonight. Scripture says He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, according to the kind intention of His will.
- Habit of sorting the people I love into categories at three in the morning, get out of this house in the name of Jesus. Jesus gave this doctrine to His own as comfort about themselves, and it was never once handed to me as a tool for assessing anybody.
- Father, You chose in Christ before there was a world for a seat to be short in, and Your Spirit is the seal on me and the one who does the work in a person. He chose me before I could apply, and I did not take a seat that belonged to somebody else.
